The article presents a synthesis of studies, which the Department of Agricultural Economics and Organisation conducted on agriculture in the mountain areas during a period of over 100 years. It has been demonstrated that the research methodology was improved and updated and the scope of investigations was expanded, which allowed for increasingly better identification of factors affecting the results of farming and necessity for support for the agriculture in these areas.
