Niewielkie miasteczko Suraż, malowniczo położone nad rzeką Narew określane jest często mianem „perły architektonicznej Podlasia”. Miejsce to poszczycić się może wielowiekową historią sięgająca 9 tysiąclecia p. n. e. Do dzisiaj czytelny pozostał tu unikatowy układ osadniczy z XVI wieku. W wyniku chaotycznych przekształceń przestrzennych ślady dawnego osadnictwa stopniowo ulegają jednak zatarciu. Problem rewitalizacji miasta wymaga kompleksowych studiów wszelkich determinant kształtowania krajobrazu naturalnego i kulturowego. Ochrona unikatowych walorów urbanistycznych i architektonicznych, niezbędna dla utrzymania tożsamości miejsca, może stać się równocześnie szansą na rozwój miasta, podnosząc jego turystyczną atrakcyjność.

A little town Suraż, picturesquely situated on the river Narew is often defined as the “architectural pearl of Podlasie”. This place may pride itself on centuries old history, dating back to the 9th millennium BC. Until this day there has been an unique and legible settlement arrangement from the 16th century. As a result of chaotic spatial transformations, signs of the former settlement are gradually fading away. The problem of the revitalization of the city requires comprehensive studies of all determinants of forming natural and cultural scenery. The protection of the unique urban and architectural advantages, essential for keeping the identity of the place, might, at the same time, seem to become a chance of the development of the town, raising its tourist attraction.
