The forecasts of 20th c. architects and futurologists concerning the realization of extremely tall buildings currently find their partial confirmation. The high-rise buildings have not become an instrument for healing urban arrangements, nor an effective remedy for overpopulation or a means which enables urban communities to equalize the chances and standards of life – but they are nevertheless irreplaceable as a means of controlling the collective imagination. The seemingly irrational competition in the construction of ever taller buildings continues uninterruptedly, constituting an inseparable component of global economic and political competition.
