A high speed of battlefield changes influences the process of reconnaissance information acquisition. Transformations that the theory how to conduct fighting undergoes, their dynamics and blurring differences between particular kinds of operations enforce the necessity to introduce a new aerial reconnaissance asset into land forces, i.e. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). UAVs may also be used in the civilian environment, for instance during EURO 2012 football championships organized by Poland. The article presents the possibility of imagery and data transmission in real time with the use of microwave radio network WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access). Advantages and drawbacks of this technology are shown. Moreover, an analysis is conducted how to apply WiMAX in visual aerial monitoring using UAVs which could help in surveillance of widespread forest areas, border control, sports events or traffic supervision.
