SMPSMC25 - an X-ray Emitting Symbiotic Star
The paper reports a serendipitous discovery of a symbiotic star in the Small Magellanic Cloud. We obtained optical spectroscopy of SMP SMC 25, which was previously misidentified as X-ray emitting planetary nebula. The object resides in the region occupied by both young planetary nebulae and symbiotic stars in the emission-line diagnostic diagrams. Detection of OVI Raman scattered lines confirms new classification for SMP SMC 25. Emission-line flux ratios suggest stratification of electron density in the nebula. The new object increases the previously known sample of nine symbiotic stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud to ten. We argue that another X-ray emitting object, SMP SMC 22 is also a misclassified planetary nebula, although we do not provide definite evidence.
