Types of corrosion and strukture in internal parts on the middle oil collection level of a coal tar distillation column were examined. The damage of 1H18N9T austenitic stainless steel caps, nozzles and trays seems to be caused by stress corrosion cracking due to internal stresses left over from manufacture of the plates and fabrication of the column. Pitting, general corrosion and stress corrosion cracking occured in the aggressive environment containing chlorides and hydrogen sulphide.
