W nowej sytuacji demograficznej, ekonomicznej i kulturalnej "idei dzieła architektonicznego" nie wystarczy sprowadzić wyłącznie do "dzieła sztuki". Architekturę trzeba traktować jako szeroko pojmowane rzemiosło, z którego może dopiero wyłonić się dzieło. Dla Richarda Sennetta, dobry rzemieślnik to ten, który "szuka rozwiązań pozwalających mu odkrywać wciąż nowe obszary. Rozwiązywanie problemów i ich wynajdywanie są w jego umyśle nierozerwalnie ze sobą związane".

In the future demographic, economic and cultural contexts the idea of an 'Architectural Masterpiece' couldn't survive, if reduced to a mere 'masterpiece of art'. To save architecture, we must consider it as a craftsmanship in the broad sense of the term, from which a masterpiece may emerge. "The Craftsman" described by Richard Sennett in his recent book, "uses solutions to uncover new territory. Problem solving and problem finding are intimately related in his mind".
