On a Systematic Error in the Polish Translation of the 'Nicomachean Ethics'

The main aim of the article is to point out that in the Polish translation of the 'Nicomachean Ethics' (NE) the sharp distinction between ethical excellence (ethike arete) and intellectual excellence (dianoetike arete), which was introduced by Aristotle in NE, is missing. Daniela Gromska, the translator, seemed to be convinced that intellectual excellence was also ethical and translated the text accordingly. The article compares the Polish translation with the Greek original and English and French translations. The significance of the clear distinction between ethical and intellectual excellence for the argument of NE is shown in the article by following Werner Jaeger's interpretation. Daniela Gromska, although she comments on Jaeger's work, nowhere argues against it. She also nowhere argues against other translations. This would suggest that she did not realize that her translation disagrees with them and with the Greek script. The end result is that, at present, the only translation available in Polish distorts the meaning of the original
