Strategies of translation of cultural element in children’s books’ translations : J. M. Barrie’s Peter and Wendy

The subject matter of this master thesis is translation of cultural element in children’s books and the strategies that Polish translators use during process of translation from English into Polish. As an example of children’s books we used James Matthew Barrie’s Peter and Wendy and its Polish translations. Problematical cultural elements in process of translation may be such components as onomastics, lexiculture, comedy. The research material in this thesis were proper nouns that appear in Peter and Wendy and their Polish translations. Also we conducted questionnaires to examine if chosen proper nouns already have shared cultural load in English and Polish-speaking environment. If word have shared cultural load means that it is word classified as lexiculture. Translation of the comedy of the novel was very important issue in the face of problem of translational equivalence.

W niniejszej pracy magisterskiej przedmiotem zainteresowania były strategie tłumaczenia elementu kulturowego w przekładach literatury dziecięcej na przykładzie powieści J. M. Barriego Peter and Wendy. Za materiał badawczy w tej pracy posłużyły nazwy własne pojawiające się w Peter and Wendy oraz w jej polskich tłumaczeniach. Niezwykle istotne było także zagadnienie przekładania komizmu wobec problemu ekwiwalencji tłumaczeniowej. Za pomocą badań ankietowych stwierdzono, które nazwy posiadają wspólny ładunek kulturowy – stanowią przejaw leksykultury. Zbadano, jak poszczególne przykłady leksykultury angielskiej odbierane są w kręgach językowych polskim i angielskim i jakie zabiegi wobec takich wyrazów, zwrotów i wyrażeń zostały zastosowane przez polskich tłumaczy, by oddać specyfikę i poziom nasycenia tekstu wyjściowego wyrazami noszącymi wspólny ładunek kulturowy.
