What the hip-hop culture is?

Dissertation presents the Hip-hop culture from the fan perspective. It is an attempt to answer the question what the hip-hop culture is for its consignees. Not only it controvert with stereotypes but also it analyze their sources. The main purpose of this, is showing how unawareness, and schematic approach are influencing newly-born cultures, like hip-hop, in a destructive way. What is more, it also shows how important element of each culture is a social background. Complex presentation of the history of genre and its four pillars, – creating music known as a DJ’ing, breakdance, rhyming and graffiti art, reflects the core of hip-hop and its structural division. Description of birth and development of each of those elements in Poland and USA provide the reason of different culture characters in those two countries. Another important element of this thesis is divagation on how culture is presented in mass media and the unreliability of music rankings.

Praca przedstawia kulturę Hip-hopową z perspektywy fana. Jako całość stanowi ona próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie czym jest kultura dla jej odbiorcy. Praca podejmuje polemikę ze stereotypami związanymi z kulturą i analizuje ich źródła. Ma to na celu wykazanie jak często niewiedza i schematyczne podejście wpływa destrukcyjnie na nowe ruchy kulturowe, do których hip-hop niewątpliwie się zalicza. Ukazuje to jak istotnym elementem dla każdej kultury jest kontekst społeczny. Kompleksowe przedstawienie historii gatunku i jego czterech filarów – tworzenia muzyki zwanego DJ'ingiem , taniec określanego jako breakdance, rymowania oraz graffiti naświetla istotę kultury i jej rozbicie strukturalne. Opis narodzenia i rozwoju każdego z tych elementów w Polsce i USA pozwala wskazać przyczynę różnic odmiennego charakteru kultury w tych dwóch środowiskach. Kolejny element stanowią rozważania na temat sposobu prezentacji kultury przez media oraz niemiarodajności rankingów muzycznych przy ocenie popularności prądu muzycznego.
