Psychological portraits of Lars von Trier’s lead characters based on examples from Breaking the Waves (1996), Dancer in the Dark (2000), Dogville (2003).

W pracy opisano portrety psychologiczne głównych bohaterek filmów Larsa von Triera: Bess z Przełamując Fale (1996), Selmy z Tańcząc w ciemnociach (2000) i Grace z Dogville (2003). Autor poddaje analizie ich charakterystyki, wykorzystując psychologiczne teorie dotyczące zachowań autodestrukcyjnych, osobowości zależnej oraz procesu stygmatyzacji. Wykazano, że chociaż bohaterki są wrażliwymi idealistkami, w sytuacjach opresyjnych pozostają zdecydowane i wytrwałe. Mimo posiadania szlachetnego celu stają się bezbronne, naznaczone społecznym piętnem, a główną przyczyną takiego stanu rzeczy jest ich brak instynktu samozachowawczego.

This paper describes psychological portraits of Lars von Trier’s lead characters: Bess from Breaking the Waves (1996), Selma from Dancer in the Dark (2000) and Grace from Dogville (2003). The author analyzed their personalities and indicates such psychological disorders as self-destructive behavior, dependent personality syndrome and process of social stigmatization. The conclusion is that these three heroines apart from being vulnerable idealists in oppressive situations remains determined and persistent. Despite of having a noble purpose lead characters are helpless, marked by social stigma and it is mainly caused by lack of instinct of self-preservation.
