History and memory of Polish immigration in Brazil – study of Z Polski do Brazylii (wspomnienia z lat 1916-1937) of Jan Krawczyk.

This study aims to present the history of Polish immigration in the South of Brazil in the end of the XIX and in the beginning of the XX century and the memories of immigrants, analysing Jan Krawczyk’s book Z Polski do Brazylii (wspomnienia z lat 1916-1937) as an example of this type of literature. In the first part of this thesis we present the historical and cultural context of the Polish migration in the period called “Brazilian fever”, both in Poland and Brasil. The reader can get to know more precisely the situation in the Polish countryside at this period, the conditions of the immigrants’ journey across the ocean and the reality in the Polish colonies in the Brazilian interior. In addition, the study analyses the historical documents concerning Polish immigration in Brasil and the factors that could have influenced their contents. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to the memories of the immigrants. This part includes a theoretical presentation of the literary genre of autobiography and similar genres, generally called “literature of personal document” and the evaluation of their historical value and credibility. Additionally, Jan Krawczyk’s memories are analised in the light of the concepts developed in previous chapters. The study underlines the contrast between historical narrative and memoir, and describes how the historical events are presented in both.

O presente estudo apresenta o contexto histórico da imigração polonesa no sul do Brasil na virada do século XIX para o século XX e a questão das memórias dos imigrantes, tomando como um exemplo o livro Z Polski do Brazylii – wspomnienia z lat 1916-1937 (Da Polónia para o Brasil – as memórias dos anos 1916-1937) de Jan Krawczyk. Na primeira parte do trabalho descreve-se o contexto histórico-cultural do movimento migratório no período chamado de “febre brasileira”, na Polónia e no Brasil. O leitor pode conhecer mais precisamente a situação no campo polonês nessa altura, as condições da viagem oceánica dos imigrantes e a realidade nas colónias polonesas no interior brasileiro. Além disso analiza-se fontes históricas concernentes a imigração polonesa no Brasil e fatores que influenciaram o conteúdo desse tipo de textos. A segunda parte trata das memórias dos imigrantes. Do ponto de vista da teoria da literatura apresenta-se o gênero literário da autobiografia e dos gêneros de “literatura de documento pessoal” e avalia-se o seu valor e credibilidade histórica. Ademais, o livro de memórias de Jan Krawczyk é submetida à análise sob a luz dos conceitos elaborados anteriormente. Sublinha-se o contraste entre o relato histórico e memorialístico e descreve-se como os acontecimentos históricos são neles apresentados.
