The changes in perception of Taiwanese Aborigines and their culture in contemporary Taiwan.

Celem tej pracy jest przedstawienie zmian w postrzeganiu kultury Aborygenów Tajwańskich przez nich samych oraz liczebnie dominujących na wyspie Chińczyków Han. Pierwszą część stanowi kontekst historyczny, który pokazuje postępującą z każdą zmianą władzy na Tajwanie marginalizację społeczną i ekonomiczną Aborygenów Tajwańskich, a także wzrost świadomości własnych praw i możliwości walki w systemie demokratycznym. W drugiej części przedstawione są różne spojrzenia na obecny stan kultury aborygeńskiej na Tajwanie. Aborygeńskie elity intelektualne działają na rzecz zachowania ginących tradycji, podczas gdy reszta grupy jest gotowa je poświęcić dla poprawy swojej sytuacji materialnej i społecznej.

The aim of this thesis is to present the changes in perceiving the culture of Taiwanese Aborigines by themselves and the vastly outnumbering them Han Chinese. The first part provides a historical outlook, which shows how each shift in power consequently brought the Aborigines down to the socio-economic margin. However, Aborigines learnt about their rights and eventually started standing up for themselves during the time of democratic reform. The second part of this paper shows different takes on the present state of Taiwanese Aboriginal culture. Intellectual elites work on preserving the dying traditions, whilst the rest of Taiwanese Aborigines are willing to sacrifice it in order to free themselves from harmful stereotypes and improve their both living conditions and social status.
