Tracking the future of radical enhancement: An ethical investigation of transhumanist philosophy

Udoskonalanie gatunku ludzkiego nie jest szczególnie nowym pomysłem. Jednak wraz z pogłębianiem naszego zrozumienia genetyki, oraz postępującym rozwojem techniki, człowiek posiadł zdolność by fizycznie zmienić ludzkość jaką znamy. Transhumanizm, ruch który stoi w centrum tej rewolucji, proponuje radykalne zmiany, mające pomóc nam oszukać śmierć i znacząco zwiększyć możliwości naszego mózgu. Pomimo, iż pomysły transhumanistów wydają się bliskie fantastyce, wiele z nich jest już obecnych w naszym społeczeństwie. Środki wzmacniające funkcje poznawcze, cyborgi, manipulacje genami, czy nawet technologie obecne w życiu codziennym powoli urzeczywistniają idee sztucznego udoskonalania człowieka. Dążąc w kierunku nieuniknionych, radykalnych rozwiązań, musimy rozważyć etyczne problemy z tym związane. Biokonswerwatyści przekonują, że społeczne przyzwolenie na transhumanistyczne ideały “zatraci człowieczeństwo” i naszą wyjątkową “istotę ludzkości”. Głębsza analiza, ukazuje chwiejność tego argumentu, gdyż pojęcie natury człowieka nie jest ponadczasowe. Znacznie bardziej wymagającym problemem etycznym do którego pchają rozważania o transhumaniźmie, są jego eugeniczne zapędy i socjoekonomiczny wpływ na społeczeństwo.

The quest for enhancing the human species is certainly not a new idea. Yet with a deeper understanding of genetics and accelerated progress in technology, humans are now capable of physically changing what we know as humanity. Transhumanism, the movement at the center of this evolution, proposes radical changes that could help us evade death and vastly increase current cognitive powers. Although transhumanist measures appear to be creations of science fiction, their ideas are already present in many aspects of society today. Cognitive enhancers, cyborg machinery, gene manipulation, and even everyday technologies are all gradual implementations of human enhancement. As we head down the slope towards radical enhancement, we must recognize the ethical consequences that develop. Some bioconservatives contend that allowing society to slip towards transhumanist ideals will “deface humanity” and our unique “human essence”. Deeper analysis, however, reveals that this argument is volatile, as human nature cannot be assigned a strict definition that withstands time. A more demanding ethical issue that transhumanism thrusts upon us is how it may begin to resemble eugenic measures and impact socioeconomic relations within society.
