The Evil Without; Systemic Evil in Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness and William Golding's Lord of the Flies

The main aim of the present thesis is to examine the possible sources of evil andviolence in Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and William Golding’s Lord of the Flies,focusing on the influence of situational and systemic forces. I attempt to identify elements ofdehumanisation, deindividuation, and collective and passive evil in the narratives. Theanalysis is preceded by a review of social theories explaining the existence of evil embracedin Hannah Arendt’s concept of the banality of evil and a phenomenon called the Lucifer effectdescribed by Philip Zimbardo.

Celem niniejszej pracy jest identyfikacja możliwych źródeł zła i przemocy w dwóchwybranych przeze mnie dziełach - Jądrze ciemności Josepha Conrada i Władcy muchWilliama Goldinga. Nacisk został położony na identyfikację wpływów sytuacji i systemu namotywację postaci oraz występowanie elementów dehumanizacji, deindywidualizacji orazgrupowego i biernego zła. Analizę powieści poprzedza przegląd zagadnień z dziedzinypsychologii społecznej dotyczących koncepcji banalnego zła Hanny Arendt i fenomenu efektuLucyfera opisanego przez Philipa Zimbardo.
