W powieściach autobiograficznych Thomasa Bernharda bardzo często występuje słowo choroba. Chorobliwy jest świat, społeczeństwo, chorobą jest wojna, chory jest wreszcie narrator i jego najbliżsi. Takie podejrzane nagromadzenie „przypadków” zmusiło autorkę do postawienia pytania, czym tak naprawdę jest choroba w świecie Bernharda, i w jaki sposób się manifestuje. W pracy autorka analizuje różne powstałe przez wieki definicje zdrowia i choroby, oraz w ich kontekście omawia wybrane zagadnienia dotyczące tematu choroby obecnej w pięciu opowieściach autobiograficznych austriackiego pisarza.

In the Thomas Bernhard‘s autobiograghical novels the word „disease“ appears very frequently. Diseased are the world and the society, the war is the disease, finally the narrator is sick himself, as well as his nearest and dearest. Such a suspicious accumulation of „cases“ impelled the author to ask a question, what the disease really is in the Bernhard’s world and in what manner it manifests itself. In her work the author analyses various definitions of health and disease created over the centuries and in their context discusses selected issues concerning the subject of the disease present in the five autobiographical novels of Austrian writer.
