The Depiction of Women, Racial and Ethnic Minorities in the Beat Generation Literature

The thesis verifies how some chosen Beat Generation writers depicted women, ethnic minorities (native Americans) and racial minorities (Afroamericans) in their writings, i.e. how beatniks were orientated in the matter of positioning every of those groups in the history of the United States, their standing in the American society and how they perceived some liberating tendencies from their countercultural and artistic point of view. The thesis consists of the introduction, conclusions and bibliography of used references. It includes a historical and theoretical opening about Beat Generation’s activity and also presentation of artistic municipal bohemia’s milieu of the 1950s in the 20th century. The thesis analyses some particular prose or poetical writings of male beatniks: Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Leroi Jones, and female beatniks: Hettie Jones, Diane Di Prima, Joyce Johnson, Anne Waldman.

Praca bada, w jaki sposób wybrani pisarze Generacji Beatu przedstawiali w swojej twórczości kobiety, mniejszości etniczne (rdzennych Amerykanów) oraz rasowe (Afroamerykanów), tzn. jak bitnicy orientowali się na sprawę miejsca poszczególnych grup w historii Stanów Zjednoczonych, jak pozycjonowali je w społeczeństwie amerykańskim oraz jak z perspektywy swojej kontrkulturowej i artystycznej działalności zapatrywali się na tendencje wyzwoleńcze każdej z tych grup. Praca składa się ze wstępu, trzech rozdziałów, zakończenia oraz bibliografii wykorzystanych źródeł naukowych. Zawiera historyczno-teoretyczne wprowadzenie na temat działalności Beat Generation wraz z przedstawieniem środowiska miejskiej bohemy artystycznej lat 50. XX wieku. W pracy analizowane są konkretne utwory prozatorskie i poetyckie bitników: Jacka Kerouaca, Allena Ginsberga, Lawrence’a Ferlinghettiego, LeRoi Jonesa oraz bitniczek: Hettie Jones, Diane di Primy, Joyce Johnson, Anne Waldman.
