Peripheral worlds in Michał Witkowski’s prose

Praca analizuje trzy peryferyjne przestrzenie, które można wyróżnić w twórczości literackiej Michała Witkowskiego. Jest to doświadczenie polskiej mniejszości homoseksualnej; techniki adaptacyjne reprezentantów dwóch postkomunistycznych państw w krajach Zachodniej Europy i wieloaspektowe konfrontowanie się obu tych światów; wreszcie próba odpowiedzi na pytanie o układy centro-peryferyjne w obrębie terytorium Polski. Każdemu z tych trzech wymiarów poświęcony jest jeden rozdział pracy.Rozdział I – zatytułowany Doświadczenie subkultury jako doświadczenie peryferii, prezentuje wielorakie sposoby funkcjonowania wrocławskich homoseksualistów w dominującym heteroseksualnym społeczeństwie w latach 70., 80. i 90. XX wieku. Interpretacja oparta jest na przykładzie Lubiewa. Rozdział II – zatytułowany Peryferyjny Wschód w konfrontacji z Zachodnim centrum, poddaje analizie różne strategie inkorporowania Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej do Zachodniego świata wartości i gospodarki na podstawie historii dwóch bohaterów Fynf und cfancyś. Rozdział III – zatytułowany Peryferyjna Polska? omawia zagadnienie peryferyjności w obrębie terytorium naszego państwa. Materiałem badawczym są dwie powieści: Drwal oraz Wymazane.Interpretacje poprzedza rozdział teoretyczny, który zawiera wprowadzenie w poruszaną problematykę oraz omawia zasadnicze pojęcia. Pracę wieńczy zakończenie, w którym przedstawione są wnioski z przeprowadzonej analizy.

In the thesis there have been three peripheral areas of Michał Witkowski’s literary output analyzed. To the abovementioned belong: the experience of Polish homosexual minority, adaptive techniques of two post-communist countries in Western Europe as well as multidimensional confrontations of those two worlds; and eventually the attempt to answer the question of centro-peripheral rrangements within Polish borders. Each one of the aforementioned areas has been put into separate chapters of the thesis. Chapter I – entitled The Subculture’s experience as the experience of periphery, presents various ways in which the homosexuals in Wroclaw used to function in the dominant heterosexual society in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s of the last century. The interpretation has been based on the example of Lubiewo. Chapter II – entitled The peripheral East as confronted with the Central West analyzes different strategies of Central-Eastern Europe’s incorporation into Western’s world of values and economy, based on the story of two protagniosts of Fynf und cfancyś. Chapter III – entitled Peripheral Poland? Discusses the problem of periphery within Polish borders. The research material consists of two novels, namely: “Drwal” (eng. The Lumberjack) and “Wymazane” (The Erased). The interpretations are preceded with the academic (theoretical) chapter which introduces the topic and defines basic terms. The thesis finishes with the conclusions, which stem from the analysis that has been carried out earlier.
