Charczące glizdy or smaskmaskar? A comparative analysis of the translation of neologisms in the Polish and the Swedish translation of J.K. Rowlings Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Celem niniejszej pracy jest zbadanie tłumaczenia neologizmów w szwedzkim i polskim przekładzie książki „Harry Potter i więzień Azkabanu" (tytuł oryginalny: "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban") autorstwa J.K. Rowling. W rozdziale pierwszym przedstawiam tło teoretyczne pojęcia neologizmu oraz technik tłumaczeniowych. W następnym rozdziale prezentuję cel, metodę oraz materiał badań. Materiał badawczy składa się z 44 neologizmów wybranych z książki „Harry Potter i więzień Azkabanu", które podzieliłam według trzech kategorii: 1. nazwy magicznych towarów, gadżetów, słodyczy i napoi 2. nazwy gier oraz pojęcia związane ze sportem 3. nazwy zaklęć i eliksirów. W trzecim rozdziale pracy zaprezentowano analizę materiału badawczego. Celem analizy jest zbadanie technik tłumaczeniowych zastosowanych w przekładzie neologizmów, porównanie wyborów tłumaczeniowych w przekładzie szwedzkim i polskim z oryginałem oraz opisanie, jak dokonane przez tłumaczy wybory wpłynęły na jakość przekładu. Wyniki analizy pokazały, że tłumacze najczęściej posługiwali się dwoma z technik – tłumaczeniem dosłownym i modyfikacją. W przekładzie szwedzkim te dwie najczęstsze techniki dominują zdecydowanie nad pozostałymi podczas gdy w przekładzie polskim różnorodność w użyciu technik jest większa, lecz co za tym idzie, niektóre z semantycznych właściwości neologizmów zostały zneutralizowane.

The aim of this thesis is to examine and compare the translation of neologisms in the Swedish and the Polish translation of J.K. Rowling’s book "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban". The first chapter contains the theoretical background of both the notion of neologism and different translation techniques. In the following chapter the aim, methodology and the research material of the analysis are presented. The research material consists of 44 neologisms selected from the book "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" that I have divided into three categories: 1. names of magical goods, gadgets, sweets and drinks 2. names of games and terms connected to sport 3. names of charms and potions. In the third chapter the analysis of the research material is presented. The aim of the analysis is to examine the translation techniques used to translate neologisms, compare the translators’ choices of techniques and describe how they have influenced the translation’s quality. The results show that both translators have favoured the same two techniques – direct translation and modification. In the Swedish translation these most frequent techniques visibly dominate over the others while the Polish translation shows bigger variation of technique choices, which means however that some of the neologisms’ semantic qualities have been lost.
