Social movements and their impact on environmental awareness in modern Japan

W tej pracy chciałbym przedstawić rozwoju społeczeństwa obywatelskiego w Japonii, na przykładzie protestów i organizacji pozarządowych takich jak Hangenren, czy też „Independent Forum”. Równolegle staram się pokazać problemy związane z degradacją środowiska i incydentami z udziałem energii nuklearnej, z którymi Japończycy zmagali się w latach 50. 60. i 70. XX wieku oraz współcześnie. Przykładami przedstawionymi w poszczególnych rozdziałach są zmagania hibakusha o godne życie, sprawa apelu Suginami, choroba Minamata, oraz katastrofa w Fukushimie. Celem tej pracy jest ukazanie na ile sprawne jest społeczeństwo obywatelskie w Japonii i jaki jest stopień jego niezależności od działań rządu. Moim zdaniem to społeczeństwo jest w większości niezależne i maduży wpływ na kształtowanie tego jak wygląda współczesna Japonia. Istnieją też miejsca, w których ich działania nie przynoszą skutku, takie jak np. powiązania pomiędzy firmami a rządem.

In this work I would like to present the evolution of social movements in Japan. The examples of those movements presented are “Hangeren” and “Independent Lectures”. Simultaneously I would like to show the problems that those people are facing in areas of nuclear disaster and environmental degradation, throughout the 50s till 70s and from 2011 till now. The examples of that would be the hardships of hibakusha, Suginami petition, Minamata disease and Fukushima disaster. The goal of this work is to show to what degree are the social movements crucial to the progress of Japanese society and how much are they independent from the government. In my view they are a force to be reckoned with and almost fully independent. They influence how Japan looks like. However, there are spheres in which they have no power, mainly speaking about connections of the Japanese government with the innate companies.
