„Wewnętrzne miasta nie mają kresu i nie leżą na żadnej z map”: Postmodernistyczne poszukiwanie tożsamości w „Nie tylko pomarańczach...” i „Namiętności” Jeanette Winterson

Niniejsza praca ma na celu przeprowadzenie krytycznych analiz dwóch powieści Jeanette Winterson – „Nie tylko pomarańczy…” (1985) oraz „Namiętności” (1987). Udowadnia ona, że oba teksty posiadają cechy charakterystyczne dla powieści postmodernistycznej, takie jak m.in. obalanie metanarracji poprzez przykładanie szczególnej uwagi do subiektywności doświadczeń i reorganizowanie systemu binarnego, nieufność wobec języka, bogata intertekstualność, oraz użycie metafikcji i realizmu magicznego. Kolejną tezą rozwijaną w pracy jest założenie, że cechy te są narzędziami, których Winterson używa w celu zgłębienia tematu kształtowania własnej tożsamości. Rozdział pierwszy zawiera krótkie wprowadzenie do tematu oraz przegląd wybranych metodologii, natomiast dwa kolejne, poświęcone odpowiednio „Nie tylko pomarańczom…” i „Namiętności”, prezentują analizę tych powieści w świetle wymienionych metodologii.

This thesis aims at conducting critical analyses of two novels by Jeanette Winterson, namely Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit (1985) and The Passion (1987). The main objective is to prove that both texts display features characteristic for a postmodernist novel such as, for instance, subverting metanarratives by focusing on the subjectivity of experience and through reworking of binaries, a distrust for language, intense intertextuality, and the use of metafiction and magical realism. Another claim this dissertation makes is that these features are used by Winterson as tools to explore the theme of identity formation. The first chapter provides a brief introduction to the topic and an overview of the methodologies chosen for the analyses, whereas the two following chapters, devoted to Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit and The Passion, respectively, focus on analysing these novels in the light of said methodologies.
