The Portrayal of the Wehrmacht Soldier in Hans Hellmut Kirsts Novel “The Night of the Generals”

Das Thema meiner Bachelorarbeit befasst sich mit der Darstellung des Wehrmachtssoldaten in dem Roman „Die Nacht der Generale“. Meine Absicht war es vor allem, darauf aufmerksam zu machen, dass die Wehrmacht nicht als Gruppe beurteilt werden sollte. Jeder Soldat war anders, und deshalb ist es ungerecht, sie „in einen Sack zu stecken“. Meine Arbeit besteht aus vier Kapiteln. Die ersten beiden Kapitel sind theoretische Kapitel, die in die Ereignisse des Buches einführen und allgemeine Informationen über den Roman liefern. Das dritte und vierte Kapitel sind analytische Kapitel. Sie beziehen sich ausschließlich auf den Inhalt des Romans. Das dritte Kapitel ist das wichtigste analytische Kapitel und konzentriert sich auf die Darstellung der Mentalität der Wehrmachtssoldaten. Ich konzentriere mich bei meiner Analyse auf die Darstellung der verschiedenen Positionen in Bezug auf ihre Wahrnehmung des Lebens, der Familie, der anderen Soldaten, der Angst oder der Gewalt, um nur einige zu nennen. Es beweist, dass es unter den Soldaten eine große Vielfalt in Bezug auf ihre Denk- und Handlungsweise gibt. Es zeigt, dass der Dienst in der Wehrmacht und der Rang nicht bestimmen, was für ein Mensch man ist. Diejenigen, die als die Besten gelten, können in Wirklichkeit die Schlechtesten sein, und umgekehrt. Während der eine aus der Ermordung unschuldiger Frauen Kraft für das Leben schöpft, wird der andere dieses Leben um jeden Preis verteidigen. Das vierte Kapitel ist das zweite analytische Kapitel, das sich mit den wichtigsten Motiven des Romans befasst.

The topic of my bachelor’s thesis focuses on the portrayal of the Wehrmacht soldier in the novel “The Night of the Generals”. My main intention was to point out that the Wehrmacht should not be judged as a group. Each soldier was different and therefore the proverbial “lumping them together” is unfair.My work consists of four chapters. The first two chapters are theoretical and aim to introduce the events unfolding in the novel and provide general information about the novel. Chapters three and four are analytical chapters. They refer entirely to the content of the novel. Chapter three is the main analytical chapter and focuses on showing the mentality of the Wehrmacht soldiers. The analysis focuses on the presentation of different standpoints regarding the perception of e.g. life, family, other soldiers, fear, or violence. It proves that there is a great diversity among the soldiers when it comes to their way of thinking and acting. It shows that service in the Wehrmacht and rank do not define what kind of person one is. Those who are considered to be the best may in fact turn out to be the worst, and vice versa. One derives the strength to live from the murder of innocent women, the other will defend that life regardless of the price. The fourth chapter is the second analytical chapter that is devoted to the most important motifs presented in the novel.

Temat mojej pracy licencjackiej koncentruje się na przedstawienia obrazu żołnierza Wehrmachtu w powieści „Noc generałów”. Moim głównym zamiarem było zwrócenie uwagi na fakt, że nie należy oceniać Wehrmachtu jako grupy. Każdy z żołnierzy był inny, dlatego też przysłowiowe „włożenie ich do jednego worka” jest niesprawiedliwe. Moja praca składa się z 4 rozdziałów. Pierwsze dwa rozdziały to rozdziały teoretyczne, które mają na celu wprowadzenie w rozgrywające się w książce wydarzenia oraz dostarczenie ogólnych informacji na temat powieści. Rozdziały trzeci i czwarty to rozdziały analityczne. Odnoszą się one w całości do treści powieści. Rozdział trzeci jest głównym rozdziałem analitycznym i koncentruje się na ukazaniu mentalności żołnierzy Wehrmachtu. Swoją analizę skupiam na prezentacji różnych stanowisk odnośnie postrzegania przez nich m.in. życia, rodziny, innych żołnierzy, strachu czy przemocy. Udowadnia on, że miedzy żołnierzami występuje duża różnorodność jeśli chodzi o ich sposób myślenia i działania. Pokazuje, że służba w Wehrmachcie i ranga nie określa tego, jakim jest się człowiekiem. Uchodzący za najlepszych potrafią w rzeczywistości okazać się najgorszymi, i odwrotnie. Jeden czerpie siły do życia z morderstw niewinnych kobiet, drugi będzie bronił tego życia bez względu na cenę. Rozdział czwarty to drugi rozdział analityczny, który został poświęcony najważniejszym motywom występującym w powieści.
