Społeczno-krytyczny potencjał wiktoriańskiej baśni literackiej: Studium wybranych baśni Mary De Morgan

The aim of this thesis is to examine selected literary fairy tales by Mary De Morgan, a recently rediscovered Victorian fairy-tale writer. Acknowledging the popular conceptualisation of the fairy tale as a form entangled in the preservation of harmful gender roles, social and class norms, and patriarchal structures, but also in contrast to it, I intend to showcase the Victorian literary fairy tale as a genre with a noteworthy potential for social criticism. My analysis is based on the exploration of the history of the fairy tale as a genre bound by its historical context, reflecting the concerns of the societies in which it was composed, and the peculiarities of the Victorian period that differentiated the fairy tale form produced at the time. By taking into consideration the social and political reality of the Victorian era, a time of transformation and unrest, and by examining four selected tales through the lenses of the feminist and Marxist literary approaches, I demonstrate the ways in which De Morgan uses the fairy tale to challenge the mainstream narratives of the period.

Celem pracy jest przyjrzenie się wybranym baśniom literackim autorstwa Mary De Morgan, niedawno odkrytej na nowo wiktoriańskiej baśniopisarki. Biorąc pod uwagę typową konceptualizację baśni jako formy literackiej uwikłanej w utrwalanie krzywdzących ról płciowych, norm społecznych i klasowych oraz struktur patriarchalnych, ale też kwestionując ją, mam na celu zaprezentowanie wiktoriańskiej baśni literackiej jako gatunku o godnym uwagi potencjale krytyki społecznej. Swoją analizę opieram na eksploracji historii baśni jako gatunku trwale złączonego ze swoim kontekstem historycznym, z uwzględnieniem obaw społeczeństw, w których powstawała, oraz specyfiki epoki wiktoriańskiej, która zróżnicowała formę baśni powstałą w danym okresie. Autor zamierza, biorąc pod uwagę społeczne i polityczne realia epoki wiktoriańskiej, czasu transformacji i niepokojów, przeanalizować sposoby, w jakie De Morgan wykorzystuje baśń, by rzucić wyzwanie głównym nurtom narracji tego okresu, przyglądając się szczególnie czterem wybranym baśniom przez pryzmat feministycznej i marksistowskiej metodologii.
