The figure of Tadeusz Kościuszko in the light of Julian Ursyn Niemcewiczs diaries

Celem niniejszej pracy licencjackiej jest przedstawienie obrazu Tadeusza Kościuszki, ukazanego w wybranych utworach diarystycznych jego przyjaciela i sekretarza - Juliana Ursyna Niemcewicza. Analizie zostały poddane dwie wersje „Pamiętników czasów moich”, jak również „Dzienniki”, pisane w okresie pobytu autora w Stanach Zjednoczonych oraz wspomnienia więzienne, zatytułowane „Notes sur ma captivite”. W pracy skoncentrowano się przede wszystkim na omówieniu wybranych aspektów charakteru i osobowości Naczelnika oraz jego postawy wobec konkretnych wydarzeń i wyzwań. Rozważania obejmują okres powstania kościuszkowskiego, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem bitwy pod Maciejowicami, czas spędzony w więzieniu rosyjskim, a także pobyt Naczelnika w Stanach Zjednoczonych (1797 1798). Praca podzielona jest na trzy rozdziały. Pierwszy przedstawia życiorysy Kościuszki i Niemcewicza, ze szczególnym naciskiem na lata, w których ich losy były ze sobą połączone. Drugi rozdział prezentuje okoliczności i czas powstania wspomnień, a także cel, któremu miały służyć, w oparciu o dostępną historiografię. W ostatnim rozdziale analizie poddano fragmenty dzieł Niemcewicza, odnoszące się do osoby Tadeusza Kościuszki oraz skonfrontowano je z obecnym stanem badań.

The aim of this thesis is to present the portrait of Tadeusz Kościuszko in the light of selected diaries and memoirs of his friend and secretary – Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz. In the paper, three of his works are considered: two versions of “Pamiętniki czasów moich”, “Dzienniki” – written during the author’s stay in the United States, and the poet’s memoirs of imprisonment entitled “Notes sur ma captivite”. The main focus of my study is an attempt to demonstrate and analyse the personality traits and the character of the Commander as well as his attitude towards certain events on the basis of all the above-mentioned sources. The study encompasses the period of time ranging from the insurrection, with the strongest emphasis put on the battle of Maciejowice, through the time of imprisonment in Petropavlovsk Fortress to the point when the relationship of the two Poles came to an abrupt end during their stay in the United States (1797-98). The paper is divided into three chapters. The first one presents concise biographical notes of the two historical figures, highlighting the periods of their lives in which their lots were intertwined. Chapter two examines the circumstances and the time during which the memoirs were created, as well as the purpose they were meant to serve. The last chapter centres on analysing the excerpts of Niemcewicz’s works which directly refer to Tadeusz Kościuszko, and then confronting them with the current state of research on this topic.
