Feeling "at Home" in a Foreign City. The Experiences of Students Participating in Erasmus+ Exchange.

Promocja mobilności studenckiej jest istotnym aspektem polityki Unii Europejskiej. Uczestnictwo w zagranicznej wymianie takiej, jak program Erasmus+ ma mieć pozytywny wpływ na poziom wykształcenia i kompetencje zawodowe studentów, i wspierać ich rozwój osobisty. Dzięki temu Erasmus+ ma przyczyniać się do rozwoju gospodarczego i społecznego państw UE i ułatwiać ogólnoeuropejską integrację. Przeprowadzono wiele badań ankietowych na temat wpływu programu Erasmus+ na karierę i tożsamość młodych Europejczyków, niewiele prac porusza jednak temat indywidualnych doświadczeń studentów uczestniczących w wymianie. Udział w programie stanowi doświadczenie okresowej migracji, interesującą kwestią pozostaje więc, jaką relację nawiązują studenci z zagranicznym miastem okresowych studiów, i jakie praktyki mają wpływ na budowę tej więzi. W pracy analizuję wywiady z pięcioma studentami, którzy uczestniczyli w wymianie Erasmus+. Skupiam się na codziennych praktykach podejmowanych przez studentów i aspektach codzienności, które wpływały na poczucie zadomowienia, oraz tych czynnikach, które je utrudniały. Zwracam również uwagę na kategorie "domu" i "świata" pojawiające się w opowieściach rozmówców i metafory, jakie w swoich wypowiedziach stosują uczestnicy programu, oraz sposoby w jakie nadają sens swojemu doświadczeniu wymiany zagranicznej.

The promotion of student mobility is an important aspect of European Union's policy. Participation in international exchanges like Erasmus+ is thought to have a positive impact on education level and professional skills of the students, and to promote their personal growth. As a result Erasmus+ is believed to foster economic and social development of the EU countries and to facilitate a common European integrity. A lot of surveys have been conducted to analyze the impact of Erasmus+ on the career paths and identity changes of young Europeans, but there is few research done on individual experiences of students participating in the project. The exchange is a type of periodic migration, so there is a remaining question of the nature of the relationship that the participants build with the foreign city of their temporary studies, and of the everyday practices that take part in building this bound. In this paper I analyze the interviews with five students that have participated in Erasmus+ programme. I focus on the everyday practices undertaken by the students and the aspects of daily life that build the feeling of being "at home", and on the factors that hinder this feeling. I also take notice the notions of "home" and "the world" occurring in students' stories and look for the metaphors that they use and the sense that they make out of their exchange experience.
