The main objective of the article Dokkaebi - devil, a god or a trickster? is an explanation of the origins of one of the most common supernatural beings from Korean folklore - dokkaebi. The text aims to present the folk beliefs and legends about dokkaebi as well as analyze how its perception has changed under the influence of new philosophies and religious beliefs appearing on the Korean Peninsula. The analysis focuses on three most common archetypes of dokkaebi - a deity, a trickster and a devil. The article is not a complete study of the history and characteristics of dokkaebi, but an attempt at approximation and systematization of relevant folk beliefs to keep this important part of Korean folklore alive.
