Yiannis Ritsos - the poetry of everyday life
Yiannis Ritsos (1909-1990), a Greek poet, essayist and translator, well-known
abroad, is regarded as one of the most recognizable poets and most prolific writers of modern
Greece. In the present paper, basing on the brief fragments of his poetry coming from different
collections I will shed some light on his unique lyric voice and his ability to highlight the
indissoluble connection between his native land, its people and Greek tradition from Antiquity
to the present. Moreover, I will focus on his impressions on the continuity of Greek tradition
that constitute a vivid example of a clearly Greek perspective, hardly known abroad.
