Nazwy współczesnych województw i ich mieszkańcy : budowanie nowej tożsamości regionalnej?

The paper analyses variability of the Polish voivodeships’ names which are used at the websites of management boards and voivodeships offices. Alongside offical names there are unoffical variants which derive from names of historical provinces and geographical regions (e.g. Mazowsze, Małopolska instead of województwo mazowieckie, województwo małopolskie). Another unoffical names patterned after old names, e.g. new Ziemia Łódzka, Pomorskie (Loc. pl w Pomorskiem) would suggest referring to historical lands. This praxis emphasizes the fact that voivodeships are regions in terms of European Union. The shorter names are applicative in promotion of "regional tradition". In this way meaning of traditional toponyms has been changing and new regional communities come into existence.
