Amerykańska oprawa płócienna z przełomu XIX i XX wieku z księgozbioru Szymona Deptuły w Bibliotece Jagiellońskiej

W artkule przedstawiono historię płóciennych opraw wydawniczych w Stanach Zjednoczonych na podstawie literatury oraz baz opraw wydawniczych, opracowanch przez amerykańskie biblioteki uniwersyteckie. Na przykładzie wybranych książek z przekazanej do Biblioteki Jagiellońskiej kolekcji profesora Szymona Deptuły z Uniwersytetu Winsconsin, Milwaukee, pokazano trendy i style zdobnictwa opraw, zwłaszcza z przełomu XIX i XX wieku. Okres ten był nazwany "złotą erą introligatorstwa amerykańskiego", zakończony w pierwszych dziesięcioleciach XX wieku rozwojem papierowych obwolut. Zastosowanie płótna w oprawach książek było jednym z istotnych zjawisk umożliwiających rozwój masowej oprawy wydawniczej. Wykazano, że duży wpływ na kształtowanie zdobnictwa opraw na przełomie wieków mieli artyści, będący przedstawicielami nowych trendów w sztuce.

This talk describes the flourishing development of publisher's cloth binding in the United States in the context of general advances in the bookbinding trade. During 19th century not only the bookbinders' equipment and techniques changed radically, but also the very structure and fabric of book volumes and the materials used to bind them. Originally cloth was taken just as a cheaper substitute for leather and often made to imitate it, but then it came to be used in its true form, with its rough texture and appearance as crucial decorative factors. Up to 1870s, the ornamentation of American bindings had a simple and much uniform character, which then evolved due to conversion from craftsmen's to industrial methods basing on artistic design. On the example of items from the collection of Professor Szymon Deptuła from the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, held in the Jagiellonian Library, the trends and styles in cloth binding in the United States are presented, particularly from the turn of 19th and 20th centuries, up to the onset of colourful paper jackets, which put an end to the golden era of American bookbinding.
