Goethe was nicknamed the Olympian still during his lifetime as the greatest German
poet who received a ‘divine’ cult. The cult was fostered by the attitude of
Goethe himself and his care about his image. One of the most important elements
of this autocracy was the meticulous arrangement of the poet’s residence
at Frauenplan, Weimar. The house, which in its unchanged form is one of the
most popular German museums, is a result of the poet’s conscious creation of
an ideal residence. The article is an attempt at a semiotic analysis of the building
and its interior exposed to the visitors. The subject of the analysis are the elements
connoting the ideas of perfection, completeness, order, attitude to nature,
‘Olympian calm’, inaccessibility, etc. - that can be deciphered from the location
of the building in urban space, interior design, connection with the garden, the
collections gathered in particular rooms, places of work and rest. Goethe’s ideal
house is a record of his ideal biography, an achievable equivalent of Faust’s unachievable
goals.
