Applying the EU cohesion policy for 2014-2020, which, among others, supports the implementation of integrated strategies for urban development, Poland identified functional urban areas of voivodship centres. That was followed by the introduction of appropriate legislation regarding the planning activities. The article presents current legal aspects (at the end of 2017) of strategic and spatial planning documents referring to functional urban areas of voivodship centres and metropolitan areas as well as comments regarding adopted legislation. As a conclusion the need to clarify some legal aspects and to explain the relationship between planning documents (at the regional and local level) was recognized. The article also stresses the need to sort out the existing terminology and to adapt it to the EU terminology.
