In March 1940, during the German occupation of Poland in the Second World War, the occupation authorities decided to restart the activities of the renowned Polish agricultural institute at Puławy, the Puławy Institute [Instytut Puławski], Many Polish employees were included in its staff, among them 245 research workers, as well as 195 laboratory assistants and auxiliary staff. The experimental farms employed nearly 600 people, and additionally up to 1600 seasonal workers were taken on during the farming season. There were few German research workers at the Institute in Puławy: their number oscillated between 16 and 20, but the Germans held all the executive positions. In 1943, reports on the research carried out at the Puławy Institute began to published (in German). In spite of the fact that in many cases the research was conducted jointly, the results were published separately by the Poles and by the Germans. Polish research workers not to reveal some of the more important results that might contribute to the German war economy. Such results were published only after the war.
