The effectof thermal cycles during MAG/MIG and TIG welding on the formation of structure in the headaffected zone (HAZ) and on the mechanical properties of the welded joints made in different grades of cast iron was discussed. The macroscopy of the welded joints, the microstructural examinations of HAZ and microhardness measurements were made on the wedge-shaped cast test plates. The microstructures of HAZ in welded joints made of grey, malleable and s.g. cast irons were presented. A relationship between HAZ in cast iron welded joints and the crossection of a welded element was determined for optimum linearenergy of MAG/MIG and TIG welding. A method of casting groove borders in structural elements assigned for welding was proposed.
