Because of various legal actions and financial repercussions the processing industry is forced to give up uncoordinated response to safety and environmental problems and to turn towards integrated management systems. The main philosophy aiming at the ensurement of safety in processing installations depends on providing at least a tolerated level of risk, evaluated by the relation between possible hazards and applied safety and protection systems. Integrated risk assessment with respect to safety, health and environment is a matter of the fundamental importance for the management systems. The knowledge of the risk assessment and safety management should be an indispensable element of education for engineers responsible for processing installations. Integrated system of safety and environment management, loss-free processing technologies and ecological analysis of the life cycle can be uniformly determined as the management system for the sustainable development.
