The article is intended to clarify the conditions of possibility of the translation of a philosophical text by example of 'Introduction' to the 'Phenomenology of mind'. The conclusions can be expressed like that: (1) an appropriateness of the translation of certain philosophical notions must be justified in consideration of the whole of a text; (2) an unsuccessful translation implies the context that differs from the original one, in such a way restricting the reception of the original text to the translator's thought which as a rule can be justified in no way in the Ukrainian reality.
