Dataset related to the study of new finds of gold coins of Magnentius from the territory of Ukraine
The data set encompasses materials pertaining to recent discoveries of gold coins attributed to the usurper Magnus Magnentius (350-353) in Ukraine. The materials consist of (1) photographs depicting four gold coins of Magnentius unearthed in Ukraine, (2) comparative analyses of similar discoveries across other regions of the Barbaricum, (3) a cartographic representation detailing the distribution of Magnentius' gold coins within the Barbaricum, and (4) a map delineating the distribution of gold coins dating from the first half of the 4th century across Eastern, Central, and Northern Europe.
The first file presents four gold coins (comprising three solidi and a semissis) serendipitously found in Ukraine, likely within the Cherkasy, Sumy, and Volhynia regions or the country's central or eastern locales. These images are being published for the first time. The material allows evaluation of the coins' condition, dating, and typology.
The subsequent file illustrates discoveries of Magnentius' gold coins from sites in Denmark (Gudme), Germany (Grossbodungen and Kirchberg), and Poland (Inowrocław), as well as specimens from the collections of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. These images are instrumental in elucidating the typological diversity of Magnentius' gold coins within the broader context of the Barbaricum and their geographical dispersal.
The third and fourth material, represented by two maps, aims to visualize the geographic distribution of gold coin discoveries from the first half of the 4th century in the Barbaricum and those specifically attributed to Magnentius.
The dataset is also an important for die-link study of Magnentius gold issues found in the Roman Empire and Barbaricum.
