Analysis of Henrich Bolls novels, his narrative art from his first novel "Where Were You, Adam?" to his last novel "Women in a River Landscape"

The purpose of present M. A thesis was a detailed analysis of Henrich Boll’s novels “Where Were You, Adam?”, “The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum“, and “Women in a River Landscape” and his narrative art. These novels were compared in order to investigate differences and similarities among them. Henrich Boll is one of most important postwar German writers and the central figures of the “Group 47”. His early novels present a panorama of the reality and the lives of ordinary people. The author preoccupied with memories of the War portrayed own unconformist point of view and dealt with the cruelties of the war and post-war period that he witnessed. Boll’s early writings are characterized by simple and understated style which was evaluated later on. Using various narrative techniques Boll’s works became less understandable for the reader but on the other hand those innovate elements have made his style instantly recognizable.

Tematem przedstawionej pracy była analiza powieści Heinricha Bolla pod względem sztuki opowiadania. W tym celu porównane zostały powieści Bolla z wczesnych lat jego twórczości na przykładzie powieści „ Gdzie byłeś, Adamie?”, ze środkowego okresu twórczości na przykładzie powieści „Utracona cześć Katarzyny Blum” z późniejszymi jego powieściami na przykładzie powieści „Kobiety na tle krajobrazu z rzeką”. W tej analizy ukazane zostały podobieństwa i różnice pomiędzy nimi. W swoich wczesnych powieściach prezentuje Boll prosty i ogólnie zrozumiały dla przeciętnego czytelnika styl pisania. Przedstawia rzeczywistość wojenną i powojenną w sposób realistyczny. Jednak w późniejszych jego powieściach styl ten diametralnie się zmienia. Poprzez zastosowanie różnorodnych technik narracyjnych oraz ich połączenia, a także bogactwa różnorakich figur stylistycznych styl pisania Bolla staje się bardziej skomplikowany, awangardowy.
