The present thesis discusses the novels Sartoris (1929), Sanctuary (1931), Requiem for a Nun (1951), Light in August (1932) by William Faulkner; Lie Down in Darkness (1951) and Set This House on Fire (1959) by William Styron; The Turn of The Screw (1898) by Henry James and A High Wind in Jamaica (1929) by Richard Hughes. All of them present protagonists experiencing moral fall, the circumstances that led them to it and their ways of dealing with it. Successive chapters also analyze the influence that moral fall has on the protagonists’ lives and their behavior.Sartoris portrays Bayard, a young man, who loses the sense of his life, unable to come to terms with the death of his brother, whom he could not rescue during the war. Bayard experiences his moral fall rejecting love and family and taking up repeated risks, which inevitably leads him to a suicide.Temple Drake from Sanctuary is faced with a moral choice. She can either escape from a brothel, where she is put by evil Popeye, or stay there and accept the situation. She stays and becomes a gangster’s lover, later giving false evidence against an innocent man in court.In Requiem for a Nun, the mature Temple faces the death of her daughter, killed by a nanny, who insists that she had a reason for killing the baby – to prevent Temple’s escape with her lover.Light in August deals with the moral fall of Joe Christmas, pastor Hightower and the Jefferson community. Christmas is unable to find his identity, which results in murder, for which he is lynched. His lynching reveals the moral fall of the Jefferson community. Pastor Hightower falls and is not allowed to function as a preacher. However, he manages to overcome the resulting isolation and find meaning in his life.William Styron’s Lie Down in Darkness describes moral fall caused by lacking control over emotions, which warps the relationship between a father and a daughter, leads to her suicide and brings about the disintegration of the Loftis family.Cass Kinsolving from Set This House on Fire kills the assumed murderer of his beloved. At first desperate about his wrong judgment, Cass finally succeeds in regaining psychological balance and starting a moral family life.The Turn of The Screw shows that moral fall may also concern children. Flora and Miles seem to be flawless and innocent but turn out to be evil, as they had been corrupted by their former guardians.Also Emily and her siblings in A High Wind in Jamaica prove that children are not corrupted by adults but may be naturally inclined to evil. Finding themselves in an extreme situation, they are both fearless and capable of atrocious deeds.With various factors leading to the moral fall of the protagonists of the discussed novels, only some of them are able to resume moral ways of living.
