Percepction of educational attitudes of Roma Community by the people involved in working for their benefit

Praca dotyczy spostrzegania postaw edukacyjnych środowiska romskiego wobec edukacji, poprzez osoby zaangażowane w pracę na rzecz tej społeczności. Badanie miało charakter jakościowy i obejmowało analizę problemów edukacyjnych dzieci romskich, na podstawie wypowiedzi nauczycieli, wolontariuszy, członków stowarzyszeń i samych Romów mieszkających na terenie Krakowa. Wiele przyczyn trudności z nauką u dzieci romskich wynika z ich odmienności kulturowej. Negatywny wpływ na edukację dzieci romskich mają pełne uprzedzeń postawy za równo Polaków, jak i Romów. Znaczący pozytywny wpływ na podejście do edukacji dzieci romskich mają zmiany w tożsamości Romów, a także działalność stowarzyszeń i świetlic wyrównawczych.

Main concern of the thesis is exploring attitudes towards education in Roma community, through the eyes of people who dedicated themselves to work for the community. Character of the conducted survey was qualitative; it included analysis of educational problems of Roma children – analysis is based on statements from teachers, volunteers, members of various associations and Roma, who live in the area of Kraków. Numerous causes for learning difficulties of Roma children arise from the fact of cultural distinctness. Negative influence on learning process of these children is the consequence of prejudice, both among Poles and Roma. There is significant positive influence as well; it effects from changes within the sphere of identity and work that is done by associations and common rooms.
