The analysis of idiom translation strategies on the basis of Jeremy Clarkson’s book "Born to be Riled"

The concept of idiom, even after decades of research, remains highly controversial among researchers. The main reason of this situation is the lack of coherent definition of the term. On the contrary, there exist many definitions which differ remarkably and that is why, there exist even more translation strategies used in the translation of idioms. The main aim of this thesis is among other, to systematize definitions that have been created over several decades of research on idioms, to compare them and decide which types of expressions should be perceived as idioms, as well as to analyze translation techniques semantically and quantitatively. The subject of the study is the book Born to be Riled written by the British journalist and publicist Jeremy Clarkson. The polish translation Wściekły od urodzenia was translated by Tomasz and Maria Brzozowscy. In order to prove the prior assumed hyphothesis, about 400 hundred source idioms have been collected and put together with polish translations and the techniques of their translation. The conclusions of the study are quite suprising, because taking into consideration the nature of the analyzed text that is feuilleton, it would appear that idioms will be translated with great freedom. However, results suggest that the translators stick closely to the meaning as well as the form of translated idioms. The results would be an interesting starting point for further research in the field of idiom translation of other types of journalism.

Pojęcie idiomu, nawet po kilkudziesięciu latach badań nad nim, budzi spore kontrowersje wśród badaczy. Powodem tego jest brak jednej spójnej definicji tego pojęcia. Wręcz przeciwnie istnieje bardzo wiele diametralnie różniących się od siebie definicji, a co za tym idzie jeszcze więcej strategii tłumaczeniowych stosowanych w przekładzie idiomów. Celem niniejszej pracy jest, między innymi usystematyzowanie definicji, które powstały na przestrzeni kilkudziesięciu lat badań nad idiomami, próba ich porównania oraz uporządkowanie wyrażeń, które rzeczywiście powinny być zaliczane do grupy idiomów, a także oraz dokładna analiza poszczególnych strategii tłumaczeniowych zarówno pod względem semantycznym, jak i ilościowym. Przedmiotem badania jest książka brytyjskiego dziennikarza i publicysty Jeremy’ego Clarksona pt. Born to be Riled, której tłumaczenie pod polskim tytułem Wściekły od urodzenia zostało wykonane przez Tomasza i Marię Brzozowskich. W celu potwierdzenia założonej przed badaniem hipotezy zostało zestawionych około 400 oryginalnych idiomów wraz z tłumaczeniami oraz zastosowanymi technikami przekładu. Wnioski z przeprowadzonego badania są dosyć zaskakujące, ponieważ biorąc pod uwagę charakter analizowanego tekstu, jakim jest felieton, mogłoby się wydawać, że idiomy będą zostaną przełożone z dużą swobodą. Wyniki jednak sugerują, że tłumacze w kwestii tłumaczenia idiomów oscylują bardzo blisko tekstu wyjściowego. Wyniki badania wydają się być bardzo dobrym puktem wyjściowym do dalszych badań tłumaczenia na podstawie innych gatunków dziennikarskich.
