European heritage from below. The local use of cultural heritage in the Jewish district Kazimierz

This master thesis deals with the local use of Jewish heritage labeled as European heritage, in the Jewish district of Krakow, Kazimierz. In order to understand the complexity and the process of constructing European heritage, I explore the relationship of the concept constructed “from above” and its local reality. Therefore, the thesis is based on ten guide line based in depths interviews, conducted in the context of qualitative field research in the local Jewish cultural scene. Special focus lies on the values and purposes ascribed by local agents to heritage practices in Kazimierz. Thus, the aim of this master thesis is to highlight the role of the local level and its agents in the formation of European heritage.

Niniejsza praca magisterska analizuje miejscowe wykorzystywanie Żydowskiego dziedzictwa, opisane jago dziedzictwo Europejskie, w Krakowskiej dzielnicy żydowskiej Kazimierz. W celu lepszego zrozumienia złożoności oraz procesu konstruowania dziedzictwa Europejskiego, analizuje się stosunek pomiędzy tym pojęciem, skonstruowanym „odgórnie”, a jego miejscowymi realiami. Niniejsza praca bazuje na dziesięciu wywiadach typu IDI, przeprowadzonych według metodologii jakościowej, w miejscowej Żydowskiej scenie kulturowej. Szczególną uwagę poświęca się wartościom oraz celom, przypisanym przez miejscowych, praktyce dziedzictwa na Krakowskim Kazimierzu. Celem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest zatem pokazywanie ważności roli poziomu lokalnego w ukształtowaniu dziedzictwa Europejskiego.
