EXTENSIVE READING IN ENGLISH AMONG JAGIELLONIAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

The thesis aims at investigating habits and attitudes of a group of Jagiellonian University students toward reading in English. More specifically, it explores how students think of reading for pleasure in English and analyzes possible factors that encourage them to take up voluntary reading in the language. Moreover, the paper investigates possible reasons that are believed to limit reading frequency in English. Finally, it looks at various variables that are likely to affect reading frequency and attitudes. As far as the structure of the thesis is concerned, it is organized into two main parts: theory and research study. The theoretical part is composed of three chapters. The first chapter focuses on two aspects: fundamental concepts relating to extensive reading and the cognitive perspective of the reading process. In the second chapter, the relationship between extensive reading and motivation is investigated. It starts with the discussion on motivation theories of language learning and then L2 reading motivation and attitude are elaborated upon. The third chapter is devoted to the extensive reading programme in the second language classroom. First, reading materials in the extensive reading programme are discussed. It is followed by the analysis of the teacher’s role in forming a community of second language readers. With regard to practical part, it includes one chapter devoted to the research study. It starts with the presentation of aims and research questions. Next, the research tool and research subjects are described. Finally, the data obtained in the research study are analysed. The results show that although the research subject are not regular readers, their attitude towards reading in English is positive. The majority of them responded that they considered reading in English both as relevant and enjoyable. When asked about possible factors that may limit reading frequency, they pointed out to the lack of time due to university studies and the lack of time because of job, family commitments as the two most important reasons. Concluding, the data clearly demonstrate that there is no single variable that determine reading frequency and attitudes, but there are several factors that have an impact on students’ feelings about reading in English.

Celem pracy jest uzyskanie informacji na temat postaw grupy studentów Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego w stosunku do czytania w języku angielskim. Podczas przeprowadzonych badań studenci przestawili swoja opinię o czerpaniu przyjemności z czytania w języku angielskim. Ponadto w pracy tej znajdują się informacje dotyczące czynników wpływających na zwiększenie lub ograniczenie częstotliwości czytania w tymże języku. Pracę podzieliłam na dwie główne części. Część teoretyczna składa się z trzech rozdziałów. Pierwszy rozdział zawiera podstawowe pojęcia dotyczące czytelnictwa w języku angielskim. Drugi rozdział natomiast przedstawia zależność między czytelnictwem a motywacją. Trzeci rozdział poświęcony jest analizie programu dotyczącego czytania w tymże języku. Druga część praktyczna zawiera jeden rozdział poświęcony metodologii badań własnych. Zawarłam w nim problemy badawcze, przedstawiłam miejsce przeprowadzonych badań i scharakteryzowałam badane osoby. W tym rozdziale znajdują się także wyniki badań przeprowadzonych w formie ankiety. Z analizy przeprowadzonych badań wynika, że, pomimo iż badani studenci nie czytają regularnie w języku angielskim to wykazują do tego pozytywne nastawienie. Uważają, ze jest to istotne jak również przyjemne. Jednym z ważniejszych powodów, który ma wpływ na osłabione czytelnictwo w języku angielskim jest brak czasu wynikający z nadmiaru obowiązków związanych z studiami, pracą i rodziną. Konkludując zauważyć można, że jest wiele czynników mających wpływ na stosunek do czytania w tymże języku.
