The Town as the mirror of the soul. The analysis of narrators and the worlds presented in the novel "Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World" by Haruki Murakami

Niniejsza praca jest poświęcona analizie narratorów pierwszoosobowych oraz światów przedstawionych w powieści Koniec Świata i Hard-boiled Wonderland Harukiego Murakamiego. W pierwszym rozdziale opisano przynależność gatunkową utworu, natomiast w rozdziałach drugim i trzecim zawarto analizy futurystycznego świata Hard-boiled Wonderland i zamieszkującego go Watashiego oraz wykreowanego w jego wyobraźni Końca Świata, do którego przybywa jako Boku. Wykorzystując platońską analogię między duszą a państwem, ukazano wpływ, jaki wywiera osobowość Watashiego – w dużym stopniu ukształtowana przez HBW – na sposób funkcjonowania KŚ. Na podstawie analizy postaci Boku przedstawiono również interpretację Watashiego jako człowieka ukrywającego swe lęki i pragnienia pod maską ironii i pewności siebie.

This thesis is devoted to the analysis of the first person narrators and the worlds presented in Haruki Murakami’s Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. The first chapter describes the genre classification of the novel. The second and the third chapter present the analyses of futuristic Hard-boiled Wonderland and Watashi, who lives there; and the End of the World, which he created in his mind and where he arrives as Boku. Using the platonic analogy between soul and state, the paper describes the influence of Watashi’s personality – largely shaped by HBW – on the way in which EW functions. Moreover, on the basis of the analysis of Boku, there is an interpretation presented in which Watashi is viewed as a man who hides his fears and desires behind the mask of irony and cockiness.
