SITCOM CO LUDZIE POWIEDZĄ JAKO ILUSTRACJA RELACJI MIĘDZY POZYCJĄ SPOŁECZNĄ A PŁCIĄ NA PRZYKŁADZIE JĘZYKA KOBIET

Celem mojej pracy było zapoznanie czytelnika z zachowaniami językowymibohaterów sitcomu Co ludzie powiedzą. Omówiłam struktury językowe typowe dla językakobiet i mężczyzn oraz zobrazowałam związek statusu społecznego z płcią, przejawiający sięw języku kobiet. Moja praca składa się z następujących rozdziałów.Szczegółowy opis odmian językowych umieszczony został w rozdziale pierwszym.Różnice dotyczące cech języka standardowego i niestandardowego oraz socjo- i regiolektuprzywołane zostały jako „zaplecze” teoretyczne użyte do analizy próbek mowy w rozdzialetrzecim. Omówiłam charakterystyczne cechy trzech brytyjskich akcentów, które równieżwykorzystałam do analizy dialogów w ostatnim rozdziale.Drugi rozdział dotyczy związku języka z płcią. Omówione zostały trzy teoriedotyczące badań języka i płci. Różnice między językiem kobiet i mężczyzn dotyczyłygramatyki, wymowy, tematów rozmów, ilości wypowiadanych słów oraz mechanizmówzabierania głosu w rozmowie.Wiedza teoretyczna ujęta w poprzednich dwóch rozdziałach posłużyła mi do analizypróbek mowy bohaterów sitcomu w ostatnim rozdziale. Omówiłam i porównałam wybranekonstrukcje językowe występujące w mowie kobiet i mężczyzn.Dokonana przeze mnie analiza udowodniła, że dzięki zastosowaniu pewnych strukturjęzykowych język kobiet chociaż opisywany jako uległy, pozbawiony autorytetui asertywności, może posłużyć w celu demonstracji władzy i statusu społecznego.Wcześniejsze obserwacje zawarte w części teoretycznej tej pracy opisywały „językmężczyzn” jako asertywny i niezależny. W swoim badaniu starałam się udowodnić, że jestinaczej. Oczekiwania społeczne związane z pochodzeniem bohaterów oraz oczekiwaniakulturowe dotyczące płci bohaterów przyczyniły się do użycia poszczególnych formjęzykowych przez przedstawicieli obu płci analizowanych w sitcomie.

The aim of this thesis was to familiarise the reader with the linguistic behaviour of thecharacters in the sitcom Keeping Up Appearances. I wished to discuss patterns typical of thefemale and male characters’ language and to illustrate status and gender relations manifestedthrough the language of women. My thesis was structured in the following order.The first chapter offered a detailed description of language varieties. Certaindifferences concerning characteristics of standard and non-standard language, socio- andregiolect were mentioned in order to provide a theoretical background for the scrutiny of thespeech samples in the sitcom in Chapter 3. For the purpose of the further analysis the featuresof three British accents were also discussed.The second chapter concentrated on the relationship between language and gender.I described three theories concerning this field of interest. I discussed certain differencesbetween women’s and men’s language in the sitcom in terms of grammar, pronunciation,themes of conversations, amount of speech and turn-taking mechanisms.In the third chapter I applied the theoretical knowledge presented in the two previouschapters to the analysis of the speech samples in the sitcom. Certain linguistic structures usedby the female and the male speakers were described and compared to one another.The results of my study showed that women’s language, although described in the pastas submissive, devoid of authority and lacking assertiveness, through the use of certainlinguistic structures, may become a demonstration of power and social status. Additionally,although men’s language has been previously described as assertive, powerful andindependent, I proved the opposite. Social expectations concerned with the characters’provenance and cultural expectations connected with the speakers’ sex constituted two basicmarkers determining the occurrence of particular linguistic forms either in the women’s or themen’s utterances in the sitcom.
