A study in loneliness. On Wisława Szymborska’s and Zbigniew Herbert’s poetry

Agnieszka Gawron w jednym z artykułów napisała: „Literatura ostatnich dziesięcioleci wyraźnie udowodniła, że jest areną filozoficzno-antropologicznej myśli XX wieku. Dlatego tak trudno oddzielić przedmiot i zadania literaturoznawstwa od doświadczeń myśli filozoficznej, estetycznej czy społecznej.”. Jednym z pytań przed, którym staje współczesna poetyka i teoria literatury jest pytanie o samotność. Celem pracy jest zastanowienie się nad obecnością samotności w poezji Zbigniewa Herberta i Wisławy Szymborskiej, jako elementu łączącego twórczość obojga. Wyodrębnienie kategorii samotności daje szansę, by na nowo odczytać dorobek literacki najwybitniejszych polskich poetów i uchwycić te elementy ich poezji, które do tej pory były niezauważalne. Autor odwołując się do polskich i zagranicznych socjologów, pedagogów, psychologów oraz antropologów kultury definiuje samotność i osamotnienie, które jak dowodzi należy traktować, jako dwa współistniejące ze sobą, ale jednak osobne pojęcia. Część właściwa pracy została podzielona na dwa rozdziały, w których pierwszy pt.: "Od samotności" traktuje o samotności i różnych jej ujęciach w poezji Wisławy Szymborskiej i Zbigniewa Herberta, a drugi pt.: "Do osamotnienia" przedstawia te wiersze, w których osamotnienie pełni dominującą rolę. W zakończeniu zostają sformułowane ostateczne wnioski, które płyną z podjętej w pracy analizy porównawczej dzieł omawianych poetów.

In one of her articles, Agnieszka Gawron wrote: “Literature in the last decades has proven that it is a fertile ground for philosophical and anthropological notions of the 20th century. Therefore, it is difficult to distinguish the subject and tasks of literary studies from the experiences of a philosophical, aesthetical or social thought.” One of the questions laid before contemporary poetry and literary theory is that of loneliness.The aim of the thesis is to reflect on the presence of loneliness as a common ground in the poetry of both Zbigniew Herbert and Wisława Szymborska. This isolation of loneliness gives us an opportunity to reread the body of work of the finest Polish poets and capture elements of their poetry that were elusive before. The author refers to both Polish and foreign sociologists, pedagogues, psychologists and cultural anthropologists and defines loneliness and solitude. He proves that these two terms coexist yet remain independent. The thesis is divided into two chapters. The first one, "From loneliness", deals with loneliness and how it was captured in the poetry of Szymborska and Herbert, while the second chapter, "To solitude", is focused on poems in which the feeling of solitude is predominant. At the end of the thesis there is a conclusion which stems from the comparative analysis conducted on the poems of aforementioned authors.
