The thesis analyses how The Spanish Civil War is represented in Homage To Catalonia by George Orwell and For Whom The Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway. The first chapter shortly presents the notion of war literature, provides an overview of the historical background to the Spanish Civil War, looks at the issue of foreign participation in the conflict and discusses Orwell’s and Hemingway’s relations to Spain. The second chapter focuses on the representation of the Spanish Civil War in Homage To Catalonia. It analyses how the style of the memoir influences the readers’ reception of the war described by Orwell. Then, the chapter explores the way politics is treated in the memoir. Finally, it looks into the description of the people who fought in the war, as well as the combat itself. The third chapter is devoted to the portrayal of the Spanish Civil War in For Whom The Bell Tolls. It examines the similarities and differences in the representation of the war in Hemingway’s novel and Orwell’s memoir.

Przedmiotem niniejszej pracy jest obraz hiszpańskiej wojny domowej zaprezentowany w utworach “W hołdzie Katalonii” George’a Orwella oraz “Komu bije dzwon” Ernesta Hemingwaya. Pierwszy rozdział omawia pokrótce zagadnienie literatury wojennej a także opisuje przyczyny i przebieg hiszpańskiej wojny domowej. Dalej poruszona zostaje kwestia zewnętrznej interwencji w konflikt oraz powiązanie Orwella i Hemingwaya z Hiszpanią. Rozdział drugi poświęcony jest sposobowi przedstawienia hiszpańskiej wojny domowej w utworze „W hołdzie Katalonii.” Analizowany jest wpływ stylu Orwella na odbiór wojny przez czytelnika, sposób w jaki pisarz przedstawia sytuację polityczną Hiszpanii, walkę i jej uczestników. Ostatni rozdział poświęcony jest obrazowi konfliktu w “Komu bije dzwon.” W tym rozdziale omówione zostają podobieństwa i różnice w przedstawieniu hiszpańskiej wojny domowej przez Orwella i Hemingwaya.
