Postapokaliptyczny krajobraz w wybranych powieściach Paula Austera, Margaret Atwood i Cormaca McCarthy’ego

Celem tej pracy jest analiza postapokaliptycznych wizji świata na przykładzie powieści „W kraju rzeczy ostatnich” Paula Austera, „Opowieść podręcznej” Margaret Atwood oraz „Droga” Cormaca McCarthy’ego. W pracy koncentruję się na zbadaniu trzech różnych przedstawień postapokaliptycznego krajobrazu. Pierwszy rozdział nakreśla ogólny zarys analizowanych środowisk. Rozdział drugi zawiera dogłębną analizę i interpretację różnych sposobów życia w postapokaliptycznym świecie. Wprowadzony został tu podział na słabe i podporządkowujące się jednostki oraz silnych indywidualistów. Rozdział trzeci stanowi analizę przestrzeni miejskich przedstawionych w powieściach, jak również elementów dystopijnych w nich zawartych. Ostatni rozdział bada znaczenie tytułów powieści w kontekście postapokaliptycznym. Praca kończy się przedstawieniem wniosków płynących z analizy wspomnianych problemów.

The thesis is an analysis of different representations of possible worlds after an apocalyptic disaster in Paul Auster’s In the Country of Last Things, Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale and Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. The major aim of the study is the examination of the novels as works presenting three different types of post-apocalyptic landscape. The presentation of general overviews of the three landscapes constitutes the major part of the first chapter. The second one is an interpretation of the ways in which the post-apocalyptic landscape influences the lives of its inhabitants, as well as an examination of various ways of living in such oppressive worlds. The analysis of the urban space in the novels is introduced in the third chapter. Moreover, dystopian elements that can be found in these works are also pointed out. The cataclysms that changed the environments depicted by Paul Auster, Margaret Atwood and Cormac McCarthy, are interpreted as a warning for the future. The importance and meaning of the titles of the novels is also discussed. Furthermore, the thesis also provides a comparison of different conceptions of space and the levels of degradation of human values in the post-apocalyptic environment. The study ends with conclusions based on the analysis of all the problems.
