The influence of metropolitan functions on the competitiveness of the city: the case of Krakow

Celem pracy jest identyfikacja funkcji metropolitalnych, jakie pełni miasto Kraków a także zbadanie wpływu funkcji metropolitalnych na gospodarkę a w szczególności na rozwój nowoczesnej gospodarki miasta. W pracy przedstawiono różne definicje pojęcia metropolii i ich klasyfikacje oraz różne podejścia do konkurencyjności gospodarki. Na początku zarysowano historię miasta Krakowa. Szczegółowo opisano funkcje metropolitalne, jakie pełni miasto Kraków oraz zestawiono je z funcjami pełnionymi przez inne polskie miasta. W analizie konkurencyjności gospodarki porównano Kraków z miastami polskimi: Poznaniem, Wrocławiem i Trójmiastem oraz z europejskimi: Lipskiem i Brnem. Do porównania Krakowa z miastami polskimi wykorzystano syntetyczny wskaźnik Perkala, dzięki któremu powstał ranking miast. Zostały też przedstawione możliwe zmiany dla poprawy konkurencyjności gospodarki Krakowa w odniesieniu do Strategii Rozwoju Krakowa.

The aim of this paper is to identify the metropolitan functions of Krakow and to examine the influence of the metropolitan functions on Krakow’s economy, particularly on the development of the city’s modern economy. The paper presents various definitions of metropolises and their classification and various approaches to the competitiveness of urban economy. At first, the history of the city of Krakow is presented. Its metropolitan functions are described in a detailed way and are compared with the functions of other Polish cities: Poznań, Wrocław and Tricity as well as some European cities: Leipzig and Brno. The Perkal’s synthetic indicator (Z-scores) is used. Possible changes which can improve the competitiveness of the Krakow’s economy are discussed with reference to the Strategy of the Development of Krakow.
