Wędrówka w poszukiwaniu szczęścia w Kandydzie, czyli optymizm (1759) oraz w Rue des Voleurs (2012)

The aim of this thesis is to analyze and compare the theme of the pursuit of happiness in the Voltaire’s philosophical tale Candide: or, Optimisme (1759) and the novel Rue des Voleurs (2012) of Mathias Énard. Two French writers living in two different centuries recount the adventures of two adolescents who, driven off their childhood paradise for having dared to touch a woman, begin a long journey, trying to find their own place and the happiness in the world. The novel of formation gives to the both authors an opportunity to reflect on the condition of the contemporary world. The first part of the thesis provides the outline of the historical backgrounds as well as the most important information concerning the writers and their works. The second part is devoted to the common issues of the novels such as Eldorado concept, the problem of religion and fanaticism, the causes of wars , the image of society and the vision of the world.

Ce mémoire vise à analyser et à comparer le motif du voyage en quête du bonheur dans le conte philosophique Candide ou l’Optimisme (1759) de Voltaire et dans le roman Rue des Voleurs (2012) de Mathias Énard. Deux écrivains français à deux siècles de distance racontent les péripéties de deux adolescents qui pour avoir osé toucher une fille, sont chassés de leur paradis d’enfance par des coups de pied dans le derrière. Ils commencent alors leur voyage pour trouver leur propre place et le bonheur dans le monde. Le roman de formation donne à deux auteurs l’occasion de réflexion sur le monde contemporain. La première partie de ce mémoire présente des informations générales concernant les époques, les auteurs et leurs œuvres. La deuxième partie se concentre sur les points communs entre les deux œuvres, tels que l’image d’Eldorado, le problème de religion et de fanatisme, les causes des guerres, ainsi que le tableau de la société et la vision du monde.

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza i porównanie motywu wędrówki w poszukiwaniu szczęścia w powiastce filozoficznej Kandyd, czyli optymizm (1759) dzieła Woltera oraz w powieści Rue des voleurs (2012) autorstwa Mathiasa Énarda. Dwóch francuskich pisarzy żyjących w dwóch różnych epokach, opowiada o losach młodych bohaterów, którzy ośmieliwszy się dotknąć kobiety, zostają za to wypędzeni „kopniakami” z krainy dzieciństwa i odtąd rozpoczynają długą podróż, której celem jest odnalezienie własnego miejsca i szczęścia w świecie. Powieść o dojrzewaniu stanowi dla obydwu autorów okazję do refleksji nad kondycją ówczesnego im świata. Pierwsza część pracy przedstawia zarys epok oraz informacje na temat autorów i ich dzieł. Z kolei druga pozwala przyjrzeć się wspólnym obu dziełom kwestiom, takim jak motyw Eldorado, problem religii i fanatyzmu, przyczyny wojen oraz obraz społeczeństwa i wizja świata.
