Mannequin in art and fashion. The concept of the mannequin as a substitute for the human figure. The exhibition project: "The mannequin as the substitute for the human figure in Art and fashion industry."

Master thesis examines the perceptions of selected mannequins over the centuries in Art and Fashion. From the beginning mannequins were used as a tool – as substitute for humans. They were used either for replacing human in long and difficult posing process or exposing clothes on the window shopping. However, there was a moment when the mannequins became the final work of art of some of the nineteen century artists. It is highlighted especially in the works of Surrealists and Dadaists as well as the works of Ralph Pucci.As a result of collected material and current analysis the project of exhibition "Mannequins as a substitute for human figure?" was created. It has become a polemic with the viewer about the role and function of mannequins. The project of exhibition also proves that the appearance of mannequins evolved with time due to the changes in beauty and culture across the centuries. Based on this theme, a schematic design of exhibition and challenges the curator must face were highlighted.

Praca analizuje postrzeganie wybranych sylwetek manekinów na przestrzeni wieków w sztuce i modzie. Manekin od czasu pierwszego wyprodukowania był używany jako narzędzie¬ – substytut człowieka. Zastępował istotę ludzką w trudnych czynnościach pozowania do obrazów lub eksponowania ubrań. W historii pojawił się jednak moment, gdy manekin stał się elementem finalnym dzieł sztuki w pracach niektórych XIX-wiecznych artystów. Wyraźniej wyeksponowany został w twórczości surrealistów i dadaistów oraz na wystawach mody: m.in. manekinów Ralpha Pucciego w Nowym Jorku. Zebrane materiały i dotychczasowe analizy poświęcone manekinom posłużyły do stworzenia projektu wystawy Manekin substytutem człowieka?, stając się polemiką z widzem na temat funkcji manekinów. Za pomocą wybranych eksponatów projekt wystawa pokazała również, że wygląd manekinów ewoluował wraz z przemianami kanonów piękna i wzorów kulturowych danej epoki. Na podstawie wybranego tematu został zaprezentowany schemat projektowania wystawy wraz z wyzwaniami z jakimi musi zmierzyć się kurator.
